question regarding the iPhone

I've ordered an iPhone, but I got a question. I've read that Google Maps is built inside the phone and that you can use it as a navigation device. But my question is: is the whole world map stored on the iPhone, or do I need a mobile internet subscription to stream map data from the web while on the go?

I don't know exactly for the iphone but on my ipod touch (which has the same google maps app) it streams directly from the net (ie like it does on a normal pc).

Obviously the touch can only do this when its on wifi.
