Question regarding Tri Channel RAM

I'm hoping someone can help clear this up for me. I work for a company that just bought a new 8GB tri channel PC. I was wondering how can this be tri channel? I thought tri channel required 3 ram modules of the same speed and capacity in the 3 different channels?

Can someone explain how this works? Thanks!

The CPU uses flex mode and can run asymetrical memory configurations. For example, if you had 4 x 2GB modules, you have 3 channels still.

1 x 2GB
1 x 2GB
1 x 4GB
