I am interested in getting a nice 24" screen and am making the jump from a 20" non-widescreen.

My current graphics card is 1950 XTX (with x2 4800 cpu) and I'm wondering if a jump to 8800GTX will that enable me to get:
- similar performance (Oblivion, X3) to current screen / gfx combo...at higher resolution? or
- higher res plus higher FPS as well?

What do you think?

I am happy with what I have in my sig mate. With a GTX a 24" is a must!

You will never go back after a few hours with a 24" :)

You don't need to worry about the graphics card straight away if you go for the Dell 2407 latest revision, as it supports 1:1 pixel mapping. This will mean you can run in lower resolutions until you can afford a better GFX card.

According to Toms VGA charts, X1950 XTX runs Oblivion in 1600*1200 at 19.3 fps. 8800 GTX runs Obvlion in 1920*1200 at 28.7 fps.

So better res and better performance :)

im about to order a 24 inch robbie, either benq or dell, my current graphics card is a bfg 8800gts 640 meg, is this card ok for a screen this size, i currently use a vx2025 ws and most of the games i play i can do so @ full res ,full settings eg bf2, stalker (no dynamic lighting) cod2 etc, the current card will be a stopgap until the 8800gtx replacement comes out thx for any advice

You will be able to make do with it until Christmas but don't expect to necessarily still be able to run things on max settings. Obviously the FPS will take a large hit over your 20" monitor but again, if it's a problem, you can run 1:1 or drop the AA. In my opinion the greater resolution will make up for the required drop in detail settings.

Whenever buying a high resolution monitor, 1:1 pixel mapping would be my number one requirement.

As said, the 2407 (rev.4) fully supports 1:1 mapping.

I bought a Dell 2407WFP on Friday, and paired with my 8800GTX, it's bloody amazing! I've been playing Fear XP, and I just dropped the aa down to 2x, and it's still silky smooth. It was that impressive that I nearly wet myself :D I honestly cannot say how much better it is compared to my old 20" WS.
