OK, Im planning on doing an upgrade from my currect system (AMD 64 3200, 2x512Mb, 2x160 Gb SATA drives (non-RAID-ed), Creative sound card, 6600GT graphics to a PCI-Espress board.

What will i need to replace, and what will work with the new mobo?

I know that I'll need a new graphics card, and that the processor will still work, and I'mm 99% sure that the memory will be OK.....

My impression is that all i'll need is a new mobo and graphics card and everything else will just run ok?

Presumably windows will need to be reinstalled as well.....

Yep Yep and Yep.

New mobo and GFX card.

In my experience I have always had to re-install windows, if you dont I still would start off a fresh.

Cheers guys. As I thought.

Some so-called 'experts' at work had sown some seeds of doubt by claiming that i'd need a complete rebuild. I shall go and chastise them FORCEFULLY.

And yes, a re-install of windows is certainly the way forwards i think...even if it worked without it, I wouldnt be 100% happy that everything was hunky-dory....

You will be fine changing as said, you might need adapter(s) for your PSU to make it ATX 2.0 compliant i.e. a 20-24pin adapter for the motherboard and a 4-6pin adapter for the graphics card but other than that there should be no problems.

If you have a set budget then someone can probably specify your something suitable if you wish.

there was a guide in lastest PC format that includes a step to wipe windows memory about what hardware is installed and redetect on start up. I can post a scan if you want. No idea how sucessful it'll be, but might be good if reinstall will be a hassle

If you don't want to shell out for the whole lot at the moment, then get the Asrock 939 DUAL SATA2. Has both AGP & PCI-e, so you can upgrade later.

3rd one down. Nice & cheap too :D

Has a fair bit of Overclocking Potential too. My X2-4200 is sitting at 2.7 quite happily

Its an idea, but I could do with a bit more oomph in the graphics department, so I'll upgrade the card, so i wont need backwards compatibility - the whole upgrade will be towards the end of the year with Vista in mind - hence the need for a few more GPU cycles.

What you should do is go back and top their claims with how the pc shop guy said you would have to replace every single component because the agp flux circuits have tainted your hardware. Even the case would have to be replaced or the whole system could melt, see if they nod wisely :p

Meanwhile back in reality, in the past month Ive switched from Socket A to 754 to 775 and not had to reinstall windows even, including switching over from AGP to Pci-e

I swapped an Nforce3 AGP board for a Nforce 6100 PCI-e board and it was very easy, didnt even have to re-install the OS, was very suprised when it booted up, it only needed a couple of new drivers.

I just did the same though i changed processor at the same time, didn't have time to re-install so just wiped all system device drivers, and other drivers related to the old mobo, using windows system.

The only problem is in some cases you have to delete them in a certain order due to dependancies.

After re-build windows booted no problems detected the hardware changes and installed the new drivers.

However windows will need re-authenticating due to the hardware changes, mine would not do this automatically so a phone call to Microsoft was required, only took 2 minutes though.

Well if you've got gaming on Vista in mind I suppose you'll want to hold out for a card that suports DirectX10, a Vista exclusive.

As Vista will support DX9 cards abeit without the eye candy - and that DX10 cards are no where to be seen, it might be better to get a new card now, and then upgrade again in 18 months, when Vista has arrived and calmed down, and there are actually DX10 Cards to be had.
