Im giving my nephew my q6600 now I've upgraded to a 3570k. I was wondering if it's possible to install it in his pc without having to reinstall windows?
He currently has an old amd dual core chip and windows 7.
Thank you

probably will not boot but it might if you are lucky..

a fresh install is always best makes everyhing run better (for a while)

not sure if there is a sysprep for w7 where windows expects to boot on different hardware..

you can do it, you just have to uninstall some key devices from device manager. IDE/SATA controllers, motherboard chipsets and audio are probably the only ones you need to do.

If it's windows vista or above, it'll probably just work. I plugged a HDD that had been in a core 2 duo laptop into a pentium 4 desktop and it booted into vista first time.

The OS will boot fine, Once in windows you will get a number of driver conflicts. To keep all settings and files installed on the OS without installing windows again. Run a oobe sysprep this can be found in the c:\windows\system32\sysprep. After running sysprep make sure computer is switched off and replace the motherboard and CPU. Then when you switch the computer you will be greeted with windows setup.
