I'm considering dropping another gig of RAM in my DFI NF4 Ultra-D. Aside from the drop from 1T to 2T (which seems to be around 5% from what I've read), is there anything else I need to be aware of?

Can I mix different manufacturers etc?
Will it definitely run at the specified FSB (I run ~277HT with a 5/6 divider) and not drop down when all 4 slots are filled?

4 sticks in the Ultra-D is Possible, but most peeps don't manage it in the end. 4 sticks of different ram is almost certainly a non starter. Also the ram will not run as fast as 2 sticks, either in fsb or basic timings. If you want 2gigs your best bet is to buy 2x1gig sticks, and then watch it fly. The best mobo for 4x512 sticks is the DFI Expert, but it's not worth buying just to run 2gigs of ram.

I had no problems with 4x512MB of CH-5 in my Ultra-D, had to run 2T but got to 2-2-2-5 at 250Mhz :)

Good stuff. My 2003 vintage Twinmos fancies double-dating :)

As for running 2x1gig, obviously that's the preferred solution obviously but the trouble is modern RAM seems to be a bit poor, I run my existing kit at ~230mhz CAS2 and the closest you can get to that really is the Corsair PC3500 cas2, which is very expensive. Once I factor in the hassle of having to sell my existing RAM, I'd much rather just drop in another 2x512 and take a small performance hit. Seems a waste to get rid of what is effecively PC3700 cas2 RAM.
