Well im not sure if this is the best place for these questions, it was a toss up between here, optical hardware and home cinema so if its in the wrong place then Don's feel free to move and I apologise in advance.

My questions are in regards to region coding in dvds, I have started to get into the horror scene more and more in the last few months and there are videos I want to watch that are not on R2, so I need to know what options are available to watch dvd's from other regions.

I know first up I can get a multi region dvd player but have heard that you need a ntsc tv to view these, my other idea was dvd players for pc's, are these region coded too??? and if not are lcds capable of running ntsc signals?

Also with dvd's that are region free (Region 0, I believe) what tvs can they display on.

Any help on the situation or any ideas I have not mentioned would be much appreciated.

You need a tv that supports NTSC if you want to play American DVDs on a standalone player. It doesn't need to be exclusively NTSC, most decent tv sets will operate at both NTSC and PAL standards including others (SECAM). Tv's that don't support NTSC usually show up as black and white images, sometimes with a slight grain.

In regards to playing DVDs on a PC, you can do this on any DVD-ROM drive although you will only be able to change the region a set number of times (usually 5). However, you can remove this by downloading specific region-free firmware for you particular model of DVD-ROM.

Region encoding is a separate issue from signal encoding (PAL, NTSC). You can have both PAL or NTSC on a region 0 encoded DVD.

You'll find www.videohelp.com a good resource for this kind of stuff.

Hope this helps.

Yup. Cheers Eliot. One point I forgot to make.

The site above has a huge database of models along with their region hacks and what type of recordable discs they can play.
