One of my relatives is considering a TomTom Go550. The other alternative is the VIA120 which is supposed to be easier to use but is more expensive.

A few questions I would like to ask:
1.)The TomTom Go550 has HD Live services for 12 months after which you will need to pay £47.50 a year to use it. I know this may sound silly but can the sat nav still be used when the subscription ends?
2.)Has anyone here had experience with any of the models I have mentioned?

I have had a Go750 since April 2010 and been happy with it.

I have the HD Live services (and have renewed it)...it has helped a few times with getting me away from jams before i'm in the middle of them!...i don't see why the unit wouldn't work if you didn't subscribe...just wouldn't get these features (just like if you didn't subscribe to map updates...you can still use it...just wouldn't get the latest maps).

I was just looking for a Satnav for my daughters birthday....i thought about the VIA120 as it is the later model...the subscription may be a little cheaper than my model?....BUT....it seems that this latest model at present doesn't allow custom POI's and uses a web interface for backup etc....i use the Tomtom software a bit for updates etc, but for backup i use it like a removable drive and use windows explorer...appears much safer.

Also...my 750 has a slot for a removable drive which I don't think the VIA120 has (but slightly larger memory)...also the 750 being the older model is cheaper

I've used that for my old TomTom. You install their piece of software on your PC, connect your sat nav up and press a couple of buttons and everything updates. Simples.

Anything specific you wanted to know?
