questions in upgrading my e6300 to Q6600

I have had my e6300 for a while now and I am thinking of upgrading to the Q6600. Just a few questions though..

I have my e6300 clocked at 3.0. What sort of increase/gains can I expect from the Q6600? I mostly play games and burn dvds.

Also I am using a Gigabyte 965P-DS3 motherboard. I read somewhere that it can support Quad-core? Can someone pls confirm this?

Lastly, would I need better cooling? I am using zalman CNPS9500-AT cooler.

Thanks

Well i changed from a E6400 @ 3.2Ghz to a Q6600 @ 3Ghz and i think the Q6600 seems much snappier in windows, but then i could be imagining it :p

Havent noticed a great deal of difference in games if im honest tho, although in 3DM06 my CPU score has gone from about 2700 to 4100 ish

I've just gone from an e6400 to q6600 on that board (F12 bios). Everything was fine, temps high on standard cooler (of course) but down to 40/56 with a Scythe Ninja

Can't get FSB any higher than 350 though this may be down to my own cack-handedness rather than anything else.

MB detects it and sets voltage to 1.2875, cpuid reports vdroop of 0.08v during load. Anything less than 1.21 seems to cause failure errors.

Since the box says 1.35v max, I've tried that but didn't have any more success so dropped it back to normal

to the people with the q6600, do you guys think i would be happy if i upgraded to the q6600? i wouldnt want to spend £160 if i would get roughly the same or little increase in performance.

I’ve got the E6300 and not planning on changing it until the new CPU’s are out…as others have pointed out games will not run much different at all, certainly not worth the + £160.

iv got an x1900xtx.. then i switched to hd2900pro.. but then sold it cos im not happy with it. back to x1900xtx!

why did u go back to your x1900xtx?? surely the 2900 is much faster then a 1900xtx? I have a his 512mb x1900xt card, overclocked it to the xtx version. If I had a 2900, I wouldnt go back to my x1900 card, evern tho its a cracking card.

Im not happy with the performance I was expecting. Did manage to sell it exactly the same amount I bought if for :D My x1900xtx can still max out some of the games I play, so really there's no difference (except for Crysis of course). Might just wait for the new g92s to come out

I would get an 8800Gt if i were you :)

No point in getting a quad when you could get a larger increase in performance game-wise for the same money.

Unless you use multithreaded programmes?

X1900XT/Core2 Quad vs. 8800GT/Core2 Duo

I would take the latter anyday but having said that I don't currently play any RTS games, it could be the case that if you play these kinda games where you build 1000's of units and stuff like that you may benefit from the xtra cores on a quad? dunno for sure because I dont have a quad or any RTS games to test :D

bimmerboii what monitor res do you normally game at?

i have a 22" viewsonic vx2235wm. i always have my res on 1680x1050. but to be honest im still happy with the x1900xtx. i play COD4 maxed out at this res with fps averaging around 45

I know supreme comander makes use of multiple threads but the RTS i regularly play are not restricted by my E6300, i play at 1920x1200 and dont get any slowdown (MTW2/COHOF) with massive battle unless i run 16QAA so i would say these games are GPU limited at high res.

Just stay with your 6300, wait for the 45nm parts to come out. But if you are looking for an increase in FPS get a 8800GT. Quad isnt worth getting for games yet apart from a small number RTS games.
