Quick 360 HD-DVD question

Does the 360 HD-DVD upscale normal DVD's, I have a 42" Plasma and was wondering if I get a 360 with the add on HD-DVD drive will it upscale normal DVD's?

Yes - Only via VGA though

It will upscale without the HD-DVD drive, but as said, only through VGA.

I dont quite get this upscale thing?

When I had my 360 plugged in via VGA, when I played Futurama for example it showed it in its orginal size (4:3) where as when I watch it through component I get a full screen picture.

I get the feeling however that this isn't what upscaling is...
