Guys,

Quick bit of advice please.

Currently have AMD64 3500 Winchester on Gigabyte K8NXP SLI mobo. Have recently purchased Opteron 165 but am now wondering if I should shelve the Opty and go for one of the 4800 x2 while they are available.

My existing 3500 runs at 2.2GHz I believe and the Opty is 1.8GHz whilst the 4800 is 2.4GHz. I wasn't intending to run the Opty at stock, but I'm a novice when it comes to overclocking and therefore, without tinkering with the RAM etc., do you think a realistic o/c of the Opty will give equal or better performance to the 4800..??

I need to resolve within the next hour if possible!

Thanks,

Hi,

A stock 4800 is equal to a 165 @ 2.4ghz

The current opterons should hit this without issue. I've now had 2 165's both are only really comfortable up to 2.6 Ghz though a lucky stepping might give you more.

The 4800 would only need a small overclock to hit 2.8 Ghz so choice is yours.

4800 is dearer but 165 will require more work.

I think you should get your hands dirty and try overclocking your Opty, it would be a shame not to! Most will overclock quite far without you even touching the vcore so why not try increasing the FSB by say 11 to start with to give you an extra 100Mhz and then see what happens :D
