Just installing my cpu and noticed the 5820k has a small hole in the corner of the heating. what's it for? Do I have to keep the Tim out of it?
Might be a stupid question.?

TIM only goes on the heatspreader. Nowhere else.

I've never seen a hole in a heatspreader.

It's to allow for air inside the outer spreader and the die/solder to expand when it heats up, keep it clear :)

I've seen it on highend (X79+X99) but not regular chips (4790k/6700k etc).

A hole or a circular recess? The latter I've seen numerous times near a corner on a heatspreader, and it's fine if your TIM goes in it.

If it's actually a hole then you'll still likely be fine, but don't use an electrically conductive paste.

It's part of the production process, high end and older Intel CPUs use a heat spreader soldered to the CPU die instead of gluing it on and applying TIM like the newer consumer grade ones do.

Don't worry you will be fine, those holes almost always get TIM in there eventually, it won't affect performance.
