Quick daft question for the crowd. Roughly speaking (and I know it varies by games etc) how do 2 x AMD 7970Ghz editions compared to recent cards at 1440p?

I understand X-fire performance and scaling will vary by game, hence just trying to get a rough idea based on experience of the forum rather than specific FPS.

About the same as a single GTX980 or R9 290? Bit slower?

If scaling was 100% then slightly faster i think? But obviously i doubt scaling is always 100% in every game so yea probs in most circumstances probs bit slower.

My wife's Pc had 2x 7970ghz in at 1440, just gave her a 780ti Windforce OC and she says it runs sightly faster and smoother, the 780ti boosts to 1163mhz.

They do not match my single 980 i have two EVGA 980 Superclock and they boost to 1403mhz. Dont forget the 980 drivers are still immature.

Would you see a major difference in game for the extra cost maybe not.

It will be around the same speed as a 980 give or take.

I ran a numbef benches comparing my old 7970 CF set-up to a single 780Ti (MSI Gaming so factor overclocked to ~1100mhz) and it was between 1-20% faster than the TI, so that would put it in 980 ballpark. Those were original 7970 non Ghz editions as well.

I will post the link as it might prove useful to you....

My 7950's overclocked to 1150/1450 score a lot more in 3dmark than a single 980 overclocked graphics score, I get a 17000 Graphics score On air with stock coolers. so two 7970's = faster than the best single core cards at the moment, and if they are not overclocked, then around the same as the latest cards.
Unless you have a pot of liquid nitrogen a single new gpu cant beat two 7950s at the moment, only place one new gpu will win is in games with bad crossfire scaling.

heres my score and ofc we are looking at graphics scores here not combined score or physics just the graphics scores :)

7970 xifre i would say 30% faster than a single 980, I have had both at 1440p.

**should add the 7970s were stock, the 980 is at 1400mhz

So my quest to spend money on a new toy continues to go unfulfilled... I bought my current rig based on an i7 920 D0 which has been happily running at 4.4Ghz since May 2010 and crossfire XFX Black edition 7970s since March 2012 and it all still copes with pretty much everything even at 1440p.

I can't remember the last time I've had a rig last this long... Absolutely ridiculous, how am I supposed to spend money I shouldn't on new shineys when the old shineys just keep working... :( ... ;) :D
