My 20-yr windfall has just come in, but I need to spend some of it today before the missus gets her mitts on the dosh....

Nikon 5200 with 18-55mm & 55-300mm bundle?
Nikon 7000 with 18-55mm & 55-300mm bundle?
Nikon 7000 with 18-105mm?
Or
Canon 650d with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II Lens Kit + Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM (£200 cheaper than above Nikon deals)?

I mostly need it to replace my well used Fujifilm S200exr bridge which had a pretty decent image quality at 14.5x zoom.

Thanks guys, I already own an old 23-year old tripod (from my old Paratica slr), so I'll splash the cash on D7000 (just watched DRTV review on 5200) and get the 35mm lens in March.

I would probably go for the d7000 but I've just scene the dxomark review of the d5200 sensor, very nice indeed!

D3100 or D5100 second hand for the moment. The last gen bodies won't lose value that quickly and once the D7100 comes out you can sell and get that. The D5200 will depreciate by virtue of being a new body and the D7000 will drop in value once the D7100 comes out due to an influx of old D7000 users selling theirs. If you decide you want the D7000 after that then it'll be cheaper then as well.

the D7100 will likely be a great body.

It is, although I wouldn't be surprised if it's over a grant when it launches. It is looking likely that this camera will replace both the D7000 and the D300s.

I personally think the D7000 is a superb buy at the moment. I don't think values will be hit too hard by the release of the new model. It might even help, when new D7000s get hard to find people will either have the choice of buying a used one or spending quite a lot extra on a new D7100.

Going from what people on this and other forums do most people with crop sensor cameras don't upgrade their camera to the new model when it comes out. They either stick with what they've got or step up to a higher model.

D7000s won't get hard to find. There are a million and one people shooting them at the moment and all that will happen when Nikon tops it in a crop body is that people will sell them.

They would normally step up but like you said, the D7100 is set to replace the D300s and the D7000, both of which are very old bodies now. It's likely to be a jump on the scale of the full frame updates rather than on the incremental standard crop sensor updates.

I notice no mention of the Canon 650d which seems to be on decent offer at the moment. Would you choose this over the Nikon 5100? My other option was the Sony A57 or stretching to the A65. Their features seem to outweigh the Canon/Nikon camp, however closer examination has found their images lacking something.
Doh! I'll wait until tomorrow and see what everyone thinks.
Not cheap this hobby, is it?

Canon doesn't have an APSC that would interest me personally. Sony has some interesting technology, yet ISO performance isn't that great (even taking into account the lost light from the translucent mirror) which negates some of the advantage of a stabilised body. Pentax seem to have it down combining in body stabilisation with great sensor performance similar to Nikon, plus their bodies are good value. But it's Pentax, and if your serious about photography I couldn't recommend Pentax as a system.

Finally done it - after much faffing, headaches and deliberating, I finally bought:
Nikon AF-S 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6G IF-ED DX VR
Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR
Nikon D7000 DSLR Digital Camera Body
Transcend 8GB SDHC Class 6 Memory Card
All for just under £750. Should arrive by wednesday.

Yep, hoping to get the 35mm next month's pay with an adjustable external flash later in the year. I find that inbuilt flashes are a tad too harsh and I used to use my dad's old slr flash to bounce the light off the ceiling. I also have some lens filters still lying around from old slr days.
In the meantime, I enjoy using natural light for piccies of the family (especially my 2 year old son), so if the old Fujifilm bridge was decent at this, then I am looking forward to the D7000.

I also have PS CS5 with a few of my own homemade Actions which enhance landscapes and portraits to a more polished finish.
