Just wondering if the problems I have are likely to be cured by upgrading from the basic cheapo router Virgin provide. I get high pings, varying download speeds, and more packet loss than royal mail. Even LAN traffic can be a little slow. Not really had any wireless before, is this normal or a problem with the line? My suspicions lie with the router really.

I have an identical router and the same package. What sort of ping is high for you?

I find sometimes the router needs restarting to get the wireless (and sometimes wired) connections to connect properly again. I have never updated the firmware though. I'd like to, but I'm afraid because it's branded it might be more difficult or cause problems. I don't know what settings are needed if any.

EDIT: Sorry, mine's cable, not ADSL.

I have a Netgear DG834Gv5 using Be Unlimited and it works great. I'd imagine it's more likely to be a Virgin problem than a problem with your router - Netgear DG834Gs are extremely popular because they are very good. They are only for ADSL connections though and it sounds like you have cable, so you must have a different router.

Sure you don't have a WGR614? They look very similar.

Anyway if it's possible try a wired connection and see if the problems persist.

Could be! I'm just going by a google image search for "netgear router" cos I'm posting from work. It's the basic Wireless G one you get, not the N one.

Ping can be anything between 10 and 2000!!!!

mate, dont think its the router thats the problem - I was with VM ADSL and had the same issues on 3 different makes of router - took 3 months of showing them traceroutes etc then they said "they are not a gaming ISP and would not guarantee the ping" - I left them, breaking the contract stating they couldnt provide a reasonable service!

Eventually they let me off the termination fee and the last 6 months contract but it took a lot phonecalls (and an email to ofcom!)

Fraid virgin is ***p. I moved from +net to virgin(daughters rented flat contract had 6 months to go). I'm on 8M ADSL with the netgear router and the download etc is pants. It used to be so good.
I've already asked for my MAC(contract up) and heading to 02 or back to +net.

I checked the number on the bottom the other day, I think it was that one (forgot to write it down, or post at the time )

Although it does seem a lot better when I've tried it wired, so it might just be the router's wireless.
