A quick question for anyone who knows more about Mac's than me (most people); How can I get my NAS to show in the Finder? Pre Lion upgrade it just apeared in the right hind side of my finder window however I can't seem to see it now. I have changed the options of what should be shown on the finder rhs bar but its still not there.

FYI; Networking is all wired through a decent switch, mac firewall is off and its a ready nas duo and it does show using the readynas widget on my mac.

Thanks in advance.

What have you tried? What model is your NAS? Have you checked if there is a newer compatible firmware version? Have you tried to manually connect in finder > go > connect to server > smb://yournasip/ ?

Thanks for that, there is a newer beta version of the firmware which supports Lion which I will try when I get home from work tomorrow moring. Fingers crossed that will sort it as I have all my media on it!

Now sorted, for future reference anyone having trouble seeing their NAS after upgrading to Lion should update the firmware on their NAS with Lion compatible firmware.

It's because Apple removed samba from Lion due to some changes to the GNU Public License the latest supported version is published under. Samba is open source software that provides access to Windows SMB network shares under *nix operating systems. I don't fully understand it, but the gist of it appears to be a problem is at the Samba end rather than Apple being funny.

The best option is to use Apples native AFP instead. This may require a firmware update as above.

I have to admit to being a bit confused by this thread. The link provided by div83uk seems to be talking about the open source implementation of AFP needing to be updated for Lion ... Hence a NAS firmware update being needed ... Fair enough.

But MagicBoy's post indicates it's due to samba being removed so to use AFP instead.

Seeing as my Mac Mini running Lion is happily still mounting the smb shares off of my ageing QNAP NAS and my Cisco NAS without issues and Plex is playing back files off them fine ... And they are both only sharing via SMB with AFP disabled, I'm going to have to go with div83uk's explanation.

Samba is gone, Apple have replaced it with their own software called SMBX which provides similar functionality but has a fair few bugs in it apparently. There were some changes to AFP, however I'm not fully clued up on what they are yet.

Suffice to say I'm still using Snow Leopard for a number of reasons. Lion is on a spare hard drive for testing.

I'm not sure mine was an explenation as I don't really understand the reasoning why! My Ready NAS vanished from finder the second I installed Lion and since installing some new firmware which has "OS X Lion compatibility" it has suddenly come back.

I'm just glad to have it sorted.

So basically your first post was very misleading as it implied that Lion just wouldn't talk to SMB shares because Samba had been removed.

Personally I can't say I've had any problems with SMBX with no firmware updates at the NAS ends at all.

Code:
macmini:Desktop user$ mount
/dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled)
devfs on /dev (devfs, local, nobrowse)
map -hosts on /net (autofs, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse)
map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
//user@nas01/data on /Volumes/data (smbfs, nodev, nosuid, mounted by user)
//user@nas02/archive on /Volumes/archive (smbfs, nodev, nosuid, mounted by user)
Yep, definitely using SMB.

Mine mounts fine using SMB (or SMBX now I guess) but doesn't automatically appear in Finder like it used to under Network.

Haven't really looked too much into it though as rarely use my NAS at the moment.

Most people had the issue of AFP not working due to Apple using a newer version I believe which the NAS companies had to upgrade to to retain compatibility. Mostly people complained that Time Machine could no longer back up to a network share

I did noticed some changes within Lion. Sometimes mounts would disconnect and disappear and I'll have to go back and click on the mount to re-establish connection.

SMB in Lion seems a little flaky compared to SL.

I explicitly named Samba as opposed to SMB. You are welcome to read between the lines and make of it what you will.

I'd read elsewhere (can't recall where exactly) that SMBX was due to ship in 10.7.1, which it now appears to be a load of rubbish. I wasn't sure, hence the second post to clarify. If I'm going to get grief for offering an explanation then I'm not sure why I bother.

Anyhoo, personally I wouldn't trust my data to SMBX as yet. I'd use an AFP option if it's available.
