How much, if any, of a bottleneck would my X2 4200 be for a HD3850 512MB?

Play at 1280x1024, WinXP, and am mainly playing UT3 right now. Thx.

There will definitely be a bottleneck, but how much of one and how much it will translate to a performance loss depends on a number of factors such as the game and resolution.

Try to overclock your 4200 to 2.6+ghz, that should help quite a bit.

Unfortunately, my X2 is either the worlds worst clocker, or something else in the system can't take it (fairly sure it's not the RAM) and I can't get it any higher than 2.2GHz.

2.2ghz? yeah your doing something wrong... infact isnt 2.2ghz the standard clock for that cpu? well anyway if you give us a list of your components i'm sure we can come up with a solution to that. if it really is unmoving from 2.2 exactly, my first guess would be maybe you need to upgrade your bios.

things like ram type, make and latancys, cpu type.. 939 or am2.. and the mobo your using.

and your cpu is only a bottleneck in cpu intensive games. ut3 recomends a 2.4ghz duel core cpu. it doesnt specify intel or amd though. the standard would be intel so i would say a 2.2 ghz amd x2 would be fine. (2.4ghx duel is the recomended spec btw not the minimum)

I think you would be ok. That is a fairly low res and UT3 doesnt need much power anyway

If you go to a higher res then the cpu might start to matter more then a couple of frames a second

I doubt it would be much of a bottleneck - even over clocking might make minimal improvement to your fps so don't worry - you can wait a while and change the processor if you have an AM2 motherboard
