Just recently had my broadband upgrade after much moaning at my ISP..

My line stats have changed to:

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin
8.5 27.0 db
Line Attenuation
21.0 11.5 db
Data Rate
8128 448 kbps

Anyone be able to tell me if this is good..or bad? I understand that speed change but the actual line stats I do not understand.

Thanks in advance.

Very good, actually. You're at full sync rate for 8mb and by looking at the attenuation you're quite close to your exchange. So you will be getting quite high speeds there. Possibly 6.5-8mb.

Cheers for the reply but as is stands at the moment...I'm getting 110kb top download speed. But those stats look good do they?

Yes they are good.

Sems like contention at their your ISP or exchange if you're getting such low speeds. It could also be a stuck IP profile. Run a speed test here:

www.speedtester.bt.com

And post the results backs.

Speed tester just errored and said either too busy or a problem at my ISPs end...I wouldn't be suprised if it was to do with Free-Online... :p

Free-Online?

Never even heard of those. :p

And yeah, the BT spedtester is always busy and hardly ever works. It's only way to check your IP profile though.

Just keep trying, or try again later I suppose.

Free-online just been taken over by BT, part of the Plus.net network..great start eh?

'The IP address discovered on the network associated with your telephone number:***********, did not match the one we have logged from this browser/connection. Please check your telephone number and try again. If problem persists please contact your ISP.'

Great stuff...

Speed tester worked and brought back:

IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 941 kbps

I'm guessing thats not good?

Cheers again.

Free-Online's just Plusnet with a different name, and yeah those results are bad.

For one, the IP profile should have increased towards 7000, and the actual throughput's much lower than it should be too. How long have you been upgraded?

Been going on and off for a month or two now...

But I kicked up a storm 2 weeks ago and chased it up again last week so it really depends when they got their act together.

I didn't mean when did you ask to be upgraded, I meant when were you actually upgraded. So in other words, you were upgraded at most a week ago?

Probably sit on it till the 10 days are up (if nothing else, you should've got an email telling you the regrade was done or there should be internal tickets for when the regrade was pushed through) then start poking PN with a stick.

Well that's about right. 941kbps for a 2000kbps IP profiel. But your IP profile shouldn't be so low.

I forgot about the 10 day "training" period. You should wait that out, see if anything changes. If not, reboot your router and leave it on for 3 days. The IP profile should sort itself out as long as you don't sync any lower than what the sync already is (can't see that happening with such good line stats).

If after three days your IP profile is still stuck, you're gunna have to call up Free-Online and report a stuck IP profile. They should be able to sort it out.

Is that from the BT speedtester?

Never seen that error before o.O

Yea, I didnt read the instructions actually but then it gave an authenication failure when I tried to use speedtest@speedtest_domain as username for connecting. I presume thats because I transferred my phoneline away from bt, I thought it was all still handled by bt physically just the admin had changed

Any other way to check ip profile stuff?
