Hi,

Phone line comes in at the front bottom right side of the house, having to set the PC's up in the upstairs back left bedroom.

Would just using a normal phone line extender from downstairs to the office effect the speeds?

I can't set the router up in the hall and run a cat 5 as there is no power there :(

Yes it can. If you can, make the phone line extension yourself out of cat5, its thicker and better quality than off the shelf phone extensions.

it can affect the speed due to low quality connectors and the long distance.

You can get Powerplug routers which send the connection back down the power plugs.

Dont bother with homeplugs..

As above, run some GOOD quality telephone extension preferably self made and keep the distance as short as possible. Dont buy them crap extensions.

Can be hit and miss in my experience.

Best to get a 10m or longer adsl cable and run that to the router upstairs.
(10m is the max recommended but you can get away with longer)
