Quick car fault question

A friend of mine drove to the local shop, car was fine. Got back into the car, started it ok, it chuggered then died and won't start again.

Any ideas?

if it doesn't start the first things you check are fuel and spark

If it was oil then it would have been running rough before dying like that

EDIT Unless someone has just drained it as a sick joke

The engine will start without oil if it was running a minute before.

You are right of course, but I didn't say it wouldn't, my point was it wouldn't get very far without it.

We had no real way of getting the correct answer with such a detail-less opening post anyway to be honest.
