Quick car window cost question

Couple of days ago, some drunken chavs smashed into my car, and I need the driver's side window replaced. It's a Renault Clio 1993. I'm looking at getting something like Autoglass or similair to replace the window. However, because I'm only on third party insurance, I will have to pay for a replacement (seeing as the criminal scum hasn't been caught yet). Does anyone have any ideas how much a typical driver's side window replacement would cost?

no idea but autoglass will likely charge over the odds, they wanted circa £380 to replace my front windscreen last winter, got it done for £100 after a lot of calling around

A drivers side window is an easy job to do yourself. The one on my mondeo involved undoing 10 screws, 1 electrical block connector and then 4 allen bolts that hold the window glass to the motor mechanism. Took me longer to hoover all the glass up than to replace the glass itself and this was the first time I'd done it. The glass cost me £15 from a breakers yard.

It can't be hard to change a side window at all.... I'd look up on the net to see how you get the door apart and try and do it myself with a part from a breakers or the like...

I called Autoglass - they wanted £185 for the job (a person would come to my car). I thought this would be a bit too much, so I looked in the Yellow Pages and looked up the number of one of the local companies and managed to get one who will come over and replace the window for just £85. I guess it's true what they say, always buy local! Thanks for the replies guys.

Windscreens are always more expensive because most are bonded so take longer to fit plus materials as well.

any reason not to go through insurance?

And for the sake of <£100, it's really not worth it when you have to answer the question "Have you had a claim on a motor vehicle insurance policy in the last 5 years" when you're looking for renewals.

This generally doesnt include glass claims.

You're right on one hand, that glass claims don't tend to void your "No Claims Bonus" but have you had to claim against your insurance in the last 5 years... yes. :o

I dont think you have to disclose glass claims as a rule. I have yet to encounter any insurance company who counts a broken window as a claim which would affect your NCB. This is often why you have a seperate excess.

Like I said, it's not NCB affecting, but it's still a claim...

Maybe i've been being too honest (i had my car broken into 2 weeks after passing my test ~6 years ago). :o

Nothing to do with being honest. The likelyhood is that if you tell an insurance company that you have had a window replaced then most will say they aren't interested.
