A friend of mine is currently using a ATI 5870 to drive 2 monitors via DVI, and a third via a Nvidia 8800GTS.
I suggested they he just gets a DP adaptor for the third monitor, but he doesn't want to spend the money for an active adaptor to get a DVI connector (even the £20 ones
)
So I then suggested a passive VGA adaptor for the third monitor, as they're just a few quid, and I was pretty sure you can get away with a passive adaptor for a third screen, as long as it's with VGA, but as I wasn't 100% I said I would check.
Another issue, is that's he's also determined to stick with XP, so are there any issues with 3 screens off the same card?
