Can I just double check that is free, or does it depend on the operator?

It's free. The phone has a tuner inside it

It is free and slightly annoyingly even if you want to play via the speakers you need the headphones/handsfree connected as it acts as the aeriel.

this annoys me as well, what would be good is a sleep timer on there.
