some "overclockers" believe the ram slots closest are best when pushing to world record levels because the signal doesnt have to go that far, I think its rubbish, if you had one of those monster heatsinks then sometimes you would have no choice but to use the pair furthest away as some ram sticks can be very tall with those heatspreaders on them.

Sometimes you have to use specific slots or else it won't boot.

Just read the manual as to what slots to put it in.
