What am I looking at here?

I have only just started looking, but I like the old school MR2 Turbo's, which can be picked up for much under this budget, and Celica GT-Four which would be just about the budget I think.

Anything else you can recommend I look at?

Id be after an E36 M3 for this money. Doable with reasonable mileage etc. Very very good cars and absolute bargains now.
 
M3 is a nice idea, although I'd surely expect to pay more along the lines of 6-7k for something decent? I don't like the look of the 200sx, and I currently have a Vectra and I want to steer away from Vauxhall. Keep the suggestions coming!
 
M3 is the best car for the money, rubbishy ones start at around £4000 but are probably best avoided. Your budget means you can look at ones advertised for closer to £6000 which means a decent selection. It'll have a few miles on it but id expect one in generally tidy condition and a lot of service history.

If you feel that these may be pushing the budget too far in terms of running costs then it'll have to be japanese almost certainly.
 
You can a nice Fiat Coupe 20VT LE or Plus for 5-6k. 220BHP standard. Handling is spot on and it looks the part too.

Not a bad suggestion, you might be able to find a high mileage GSI Turbo for around that price. In all honesty they're not much to look at compared to the new VXR but they can certainly shift :)

Failing that, how about a Mitsi 3000GT or a Fiat Coupe 20VT?
 
Prelude 2.2 vti? Could get a real minter for well under budget.

Volvo C70 2.3 T5? Bit lardy, but pretty powerful and comfeh.

Fiat Coupe 2.0 Turbo, again, a really shiny one.

Mitsi 3000GT, there are some around that look OK, didn't really look into whether there are any decent twin turrbos about for your budget.
