Valve have said that in the near future quad core will be better for gaming than dual, however, the kentsfields are not true quad cores. To be honest there will not be much performance difference for quite some time, so a conroe and a better gfx card will do you just as good.

went for the 8800 and 2.4 core2

and got a zalman reserator 2 to boot.

very good so far, 38oC under load
