quick domain question

Hi all,

Just about to buy my first domain name and hosting package through one.com.

The website I want to create could be slightly controversial and I was wondering if you have to supply your actual name/address etc when purchasing a domain?

Yes you do, it's a legal requirement. Although if you purchase from godaddy you can choose to pay a little extra to keep your details private.

a lot of companies, such as Register1 let you mask your details for the domain, thus keeping yours private yet still legal.

That's what I was saying with www.godaddy.com

It's a legal requiremnt to give the details, but they can be 'masked' for a fee.

It's not a legal requirement, it's just a requirement of the registry in question, you're breaking no laws by not, only the t&cs of the registry in question (which may lead to revokation of a domain).

Reg1 don't charge...bit silly of Godaddy charging when many others don't.

Well, much the same thing. In that it would likely lead to your domain being cancelled if it was discovered your details were fake. And godaddy may charge extra for masking, but then other things are cheaper.
