Hi folks,
I'm playing through doom 3 and its good (although the constant darkness gets a bit tedious after a while imho) but I keep getting hit by ONE annoying type of enemy. Its the humanoid type dudes which charge at you and hit you with an extended arm (this is the only type of attack they have). They are not very tough and I'm not stuck on them or anything but it does annoy me that they hit me EVERY time they get close. The only way I can avoid this is by picking them off at a distance, but mostly thats not possible. I have flukely (if thats a word) avoided them before but is there some specific way? can one of you people fire it up and give it a go?

I strafe right - they seem to hit me
I duck - they hit me
I try to outrun them backwards - they hit me
I turn around and run to get distance they hit me
Im pretty sure i strafed left as well before - they hit me
I've tried jumping backwards while starfing to the side - they hit me
....you get the picture.

btw Im not bad at strafing I can almost always avoid getting hit on other games and online so its not that I just suck (can I say that word in this context here? if not moderators please edit post)

many thanks dudes :p

Suck, a swearie? lol :p ;)

Tried shooting the things? ;)

If you have the shotgun, shotgun is probably the best way from what I remember of the game, or a rocket to the legs.

The mods can be anal sometimes yes (sorry mods, don't hurt me), but suck is ok I think :)

Can't help I'm afraid. I started the game and played it for a bit, but got bored and gave up. I spent longer trying to get it to look nice than actually playing it :o

pretty sure anal is a sweary though ;)

to the OP, the trooper with a tentacle-arm (if thats the guy) shoots from his right hand side (your left). So if he's obscured by a pillar or whatever he can't hit you. Then, give him a rocket or some plasma to think about.

I got about 90% through the game before the 'boo, gotcha' scenarios got to tedious. God mode has it's uses.

The following is something I didn't find myself. I was watching a friend play and the tentacled soldier (if that's who you refer to) could be avoided practically 100% by ducking his arm. I was shocked when I saw him do it EVERYTIME. You mentioned ducking, maybe the timing is critical?

I never bothered using duck, just rely on good old fashioned firepower, moving behind cover when you think he is going to attack. For this reason it is better to use weapons with powerful single shots, such as the rocket launcher, shotgun or soulcube. Steer clear of weapons which require you to maintain a constant bead on your target, such as the pistol/machinegun/chaingun.

I do understand what you mean, because I found them one of the most dangerous enemies in the game (ignoring bosses). You should always make them your priority when in a firefight with multiple enemies.

You just have to duck...

Timing is the key. Try it a few times on the same guy and you'll get it. It's a good way to get rid of them as well - you can get a couple of shotgun shells off nice and up close while he messes around.

Shame you can't get the soul cube at the beginning of the game. It is my favourite weapon and would dispatch your blokes from a distance. ;)

You do in Nightmare mode

To the OP: I seem to remember either picking them off from a distance (Sorry I know you said you don’t like this) or finding anything explosive near to them you can pop a few shots in; or just putting a barrier (be it railing or a box) between yourself and them and have the AI just be idiotic whilst you pop them in the head a few times.

I completed this in hard. I don't see any real problem. Most are easy to kill.

Since I haven't played it in like a year, I still remember how to kill each monster.

Zombies - Simple pistol to the head, keep your distance. Or use fists.

Chainsaw Zombie - Shotgun/Chaingun, walk back and shoot.

Zombie Commando - Chaingun he has? Use cover, throw nades/use RPG.

Fat Zombie - Shotgun is easiest, not a hard enemy.

Flaming Zombie - They are fast. Shotgun rec.

Security Zombies - Nades/Shotties/Machineguns/Chainguns

Imp - Keep distance, dodge fireballs, shotgun is effective.

Maggot - Shotgun/MG/CG

Pinky - Shotgun.

Trites/Tick - Pistol, conserves ammo. Or Machinegun if their is lots.

Lost Souls - Any gun

Cherub - Plasma Rifle.

Cacodemon - Shotgun.

Hellknight - badass, use Rocket launcher/Plasma or any high powered weapon.

Mancubus - Rocket Launcher, Plasma, Nades

Revenant - Rocket launcher, plasma, keep distance

Wraith - Shotgun

Archvile - another badass, Plasma, rpg

Vagary - Easy Boss, rpg, chaingun, plasma.

Sabaoth - Easy boss too, theres a trick I think (google).

Guardian - Hardest imo, anything with high damage

Cyberdemon - Easy imo, soul cube + all your weapons.

Used:http://doom3.gameamp.com/doom3/viewMonsters

So I could remember all the enemies, hardest ones for you to watch out for

Pinky - Med
Cherub - Med (when you have like 15 of them on you)
Hellknight Med/High (Can be tough if there is more than 1, one part there is like 8 of them lol.)
Mancubus Med (A lot of health, can be a pain to kill)
Archvile Med/High - Hell of a lot of fire, pain in the ass to kill.
Guardian - Hard (one of the last bosses, was the hardest to kill).

Lol now you've told me how to avoid that annoying enemy guess what?.....
I havent encountered one since!!!! sods law!

anyway whilst we are on a doom thread I have another question or two about the storyline.

why is it that when the "evil" came from hell and turned almost everyone into zombies etc you survived and was not affected yet the scientist dude in the same room as you was, and the marine (wearing the same equipment as you) in the next room was?

does the game ever explain this?.. i'm currently at site 2 near the end but so far there has been no explanation at all.

also I bought Quake 4 the other day but not installed it yet. What are your opinions? is it a better singleplayer game than doom 3? is it bigger than doom 3?
and one more thing is the Resurrection of evil expansion for doom 3 worth a buy? how many hours of play does it give roughly?

cheers

A) Because when you are in the room with the scientist you see the lost soul (or flaming skulls) go into him and infect him. Probly same thing happened to the other Marines, you encouter others who haven't been infected as well. Oh yeah and if thats not a good enough answer, think of it like this, its a game.

I have Quake 4, bought it when it came out. The singleplayers of both are alike graphically. However Doom 3 is a one man mission and Quake 4 you have a team usually with you. Doom 3 has the atmosphere and tbh is scary **** (not like "omg im so scared" but like its unpredictable at times, and the atmosphere blends in to give the real experience". Doom 3 has a longer Singleplayer, I don't know estimates. I liked Doom 3 though thats for sure. I'd install it again but my computer already says its installed, something messed up im formating soon anyway.

Doom 3 - Singleplayer
Quake 4 - Multiplayer

Quake 4's multiplayer is really good, Doom 3's isn't too great. The moding community did their best to bring it along though.

*Star out swearies! -J*

Quake 4 is a decent game but not as good as Doom3 in single player - it's a lot shorter and doesn't have quite the same atmosphere. Doom3 lasted me a good 18hrs or so IIRC which is longer than many FPS these days.

The RoE expansion is more of the same, in terms of length I can't remember exactly but I think it was around 8hrs, nothing special. Worth a fiver but I wouldn't bust a gut to get hold of it.

thanks for the reply. :)

I've finished Doom 3 now, but I have another question about the storyline. What the hell is all the "fleshy growth" all around the facility, what is it supposed to be? I don't expect any1 to know this but I thought I may as well ask just in case
