i have 2x512mb of geil duel channel ultra pc3200 golden dragon 400mhz ddr and i need another 1 gig.

Memory of the same spec(like below) will work ok alongside it wont it? and will i lose dual channel if i add more than 2 sticks to my motherboard which has 4 slots.

just checking before i place an order, dont want to order the wrong thing ....again ;)

THinking on getting this:

GeIL 1GB (2x512MB) PC3200 Ultra-X nForce4 Special Edition CAS2 (GLXNF1GB3200DC) (MY-056-GL)
The new DDR UltraX nForce4 Edition is now being added to GeIL’s DDR performance memory module lineup. This particular UltraX model is specially designed for nForce4 platform motherboards with the ultra low latency of 2-2-2-5 1T command. *Note: Event though this model of DDR UltraX is named nForce4 Edition, but it will still work on most Intel based motherboards with CAS clocking at 2-3-3-6.

- 184pin, Non-ECC, Un-buffered, high performance DDR memory modules
- Hand Picked GeIL Ultra-X TSOP 32x8 DDR Chips
- 6 Layers Ultra Low Noises Shielded PCB with Gold 30u" Plating
- Optimized SPD for Dual Channel DDR motherboards
- Coated Platinum Copper Heat Spreader
- CAS 2-5-2-2-1T @ DDR400 PC3200
- 2.55V-2.85V
- Retail package with blue acrylic case and instructions
- Lifetime return to manufacturer warranty

Price: £79.95 (£93.94 Including VAT at 17.5%)

thanks

First problem, 4x512mb will work in your system fine in dual channel but you will be forced to drop your command rate from 1T to 2T which incurs a 2-3% performance hit.

Number two, Geil Golden Dragon is a weird RAM to mix and match with, you may or may not run into problems, but I don't think any RAM will be gaurenteed to work with it, I certainly wouldn't want to recommend anything but more Golden Dragon tbh, just in case.

For the £93 you'd spend on the Geil you'd be better off picking up some Geil Value 2x1Gb modules and selling your Golden Dragon, not only would you be able to run 1T command rate with the Geil Value, you'd also be able to tighten the timings up (all I've seen have done 2.5-3-3-7 and still clocked a few dozen mhz) and it'd probably work out cheaper in the wash :)

Ok thanks chaps.

I didnt think golden dragon was still available, as OCuk have stopped stocking it. Guess i should have checked some other suppliers.

Your saying 4 sticks of ram instead of 2 actually slows the PC down?

Also, noob question, Why would there be problems mixing them as they are both PC3200? is there something peculiar with golden dragon ram, Would there be possible instability?

Golden Dragon isn't available anymore unfortunately :(

Yes running 4 modules will slow down the PC as the command rate is forced to 2T instead of 1T, with a 2-3% performance hit due to the decreased memory bandwidth.

The problem would be mixing other RAM with the Geil GD, its a strange beast, and I'm not sure it would work well with other RAM, I could just be worried over nothing, but GD uses some very odd chips.

ill try the new sticks with the GD and if theres a prob, ill sell my old stuff. I dont really OC and like you say ill probably see little difference.

Thanks for all your help chaps :)
