I didnt think you were allowed to add a percentage onto the final asking price if you were paying by Paypal on Ebay anymore, I am looking to buy something and wanting to pay via Paypal but the guy wants an extra 4% for using paypal to cover costs.

Is this same for laptops and such where there is a final price and at the bottom it says VAT will be added to the final price of the auction.

I hate this aswell, it kinda tricks you into getting a bit of a bargain then find out 17.5% is a lot more then you think!

He can only ask if it is stated in the advert. I have sold a few expensive PC items but have stated in the advert that if Paypal is used...then the buyer needs to pay what it costs me. I think this is OK.

You can add paypal fees provided you haven't included paypal as a payment option.

i.e. The seller accepts cheques and credit cards only. But, if you want paypal, you have to pay the extra.

That's good to know; thanks!.

take care

It's in the rules, I can't check it as eBay is blocked at work but it's definately there.

Report it. There's even a section on the form for that specific reason. The auction will get pulled.

In any case, his 4% charge is excessive.

Paypal charges are 3.4% of the final price, plus 20p.

I'm willing to bet that plenty of those claiming VAT don't actually pay the VAT on to the taxman.
I should hope not - VAT is paid to Custome & Excise :)

Or that man, batman, the VAT man.

</Absolutely>
