Got a 400d on order finally \0/ so now looking to kit myself out.

Got a bag, a 4gb mem card and now looking for lenses.

I want a lens for wildlife and nature photography and am currently torn between:

Canon EF 75-300mm f4-5.6 USM III
Tamron 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di AF LD
Sigma 70-300mm F/4-5.6 APO DG
Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS

Obviously the IS has a larger price tag, but is it worth sacrificing the extra range for the IS over the other lenses and pocketing £70?

I also want the nifty fifty for its speed.

Any other items I should consider adding to my bag? I will mostly be doing outdoor wildlife, landscape and 'abstract' i.e. building photography.

Cheers for any advice to this photography newbie :)

What is your budget ?

Avoid the Canon 75-300 and the Sigma is the best lens out of that lot.

Personally I would spend £300 and go for the Canon 70-300 IS.

1) Don't spend lots of money until you know enough about lenses so that you don't require the advice of others.

2) The 50mm 1.8 is excellent value, but its only suitable for specific things so regardless of the 'speed' you might still find it impractical

3) Sigma 70-300mm is probably the best value from what you've selected

another vote for the sigma but as stated i wouldn't turn the canon 70-300 IS USM away.

Cheers guys. I have about 200 max to spend so I reckon the sigma and a nifty fifty or second hand wide angle will have to do to start me off.

Am also considering this one too now:

Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG

Would that be a better lens than the 70-300 Sigma in terms of image quality and flexibility?

short answer, no, the 70-300 APO is the best you'll get for your budget, in general terms, the longer the reach of the lens, (i.e 28-300 being a wider range than the 70-300) the poorer IQ you'll get.

Ive been strongly advised against that lens.

If only i could remember this lens i was shown last night.

If you up your budget to £250 i can get you a deal on a very good 70-300mm, the dude i was talking to last night isnt online right now but as soon as he is tomorrow ill let you know.

why have you been advised against the 70-300IS, it's a very, very good lens, not quite an 'L' but not far off either., maybe you are getting confused with the 75-300 USM which is quite a poor lens by comparison.
