What formula can I use to count how many cells have a particular value, out of a group of selected cells?

I have a column in which each cell either reads Reception, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6. I want a formula to count how many cells have the value Reception, 1 and 2, 3 and 4, and 5 and 6.

=COUNTIF(A:A,[reference to cell with variable]).

That worked, but to save space I'm grouping some figures together, so how would I change it to count the cells which have the value 1 AND 2, for example?

Could you not do multiple COUNTIFs should you require your COUNT to include more than one value. Or do you mean each source cell may contain the values 1, 2, 3 etc...?

Is your Value "1 and 2" exactly as it is in the cells?

Doesn't matter now guys thanks, doing things a different way. I'll have another question in due course though :)
