We have a distribution group setup but some numpty had removed the members from it. I have added the members back in now but where would the mail that wasn't distributed have gone? Would it have been bounced back to the sender, does it go to a postmaster account, is it deleted?

Cheers

They're gone.
If you have some kind of retention or archive you might want to go back through those, otherwise it's up to you to fish through users Sent Items to find all the emails that have not arrived.

Ok thanks. Can I setup a postmaster mailbox that should anything like that happen in future the mail will go there rather than ending up being deleted?

Only if the postmaster mailbox was also in the DL members :D

If you had some kind of journal/archive system then the sent messages may have been captured, but if you send an email to a DL with no one in it it just blackholes it.

More helpful than looking through sent items, you should still be able to message track in the inbound emails to that DL to see who sent emails to it and what is missing.
