Took the below shot's to see how the focal lengths would compliment each other in a wedding or similar scenario.
Camera was on tripod, focus point on tin of paint, and sorry for the distracting subject matter, although maybe it's quite useful in this comparison.

I fail to see the point of this, differing focal lengths and same aperture mean a different DoF - which is what you have proven. What would have been useful is the close the 85mm to give same DoF as the 35 then do a comparison; that seems fair to me.

Sorry for being cynical but I'm just confused as to why?

Sorry I wasn't clear enough, this wasn't a head to head test, but more a comparison on how someone would likely use both lenses. I thought if anyone was interested in a 35/85 combo, that they might be interested to see what the difference in FOV actually looks like and if they are far enough or to far apart, as well as to evaluate the DOF, for instance does the 35 have enough background separation etc.

Not sure what's useful about that tbh, unless you want to compare perspective.

I'm tempted to get the 85mm lens but unsure of which one!

85 F1.8G nikon
85 F1.4G nikon
or the sigma one like you have? I take it your happy with that lens.

Yes IQ is great, but it's the AF performance that is really impressive considering it's an 85 1.4

If the 85g's are anything like the 35g, then definitely test out the Sigma first, to see what you think. The only downside I can think of is it's not weather sealed, and it doesn't have a Nikon logo (I'm pretty OCD in that I like all my lenses to match, but the lens does kind of look 'Nikon like')

Having said that, the old 85 1.8D on a D700 is at least twice as fast again as the Sigma, but it's effectively an F2 lens imo.
