Hi,

Just put my system together last night, I have a Asus PB5 Delux motherboard, in BIOS there is an option to run SATA as IDE, it's set to ON as default.

If I run SATA drives as IDE (parallel), will I lose any performance and the characteristics of a SATA drive?

I just realised this half way through installing Visat, I will back out now if performance is effected by this.

Cheers

J

That is the compatibility mode which means you don't need F6 drivers for windows installation to recognise the SATA drives, if you have the drivers then set it to "AHCI" (not sure what other options you have) then you can have all the SATA2 goodies (NCQ, sequential start-up...etc) provided that your hard drives support them. Will have better performance as well IMO although probably not noticeable.

So if I was installing Vista... (now on hold) on the Asus PB5 Delux, does Vista have the SATA drivers for this board? If it doesn't can I swap the Vista CD and install it from the CD that came with the mother board?

I am going to use AHCI :)

Not sure what the installation process is for vista but in XP you press F6 when prompt and it will take you to a setup screen where you can load your SATA/raid controller drivers but only through floppy disk (usb one will do to) AFAIK, otherwise you need to slipstream the drivers into the windows install cd.

If you need to run raid there should be a separate option in BIOS that enables the Raid boot screen (or something like that) where you can setup your RAID array. Then do the same F6 drivers before installation.

You can usually download the F6 drivers from mobo website or from Intel website if it's Intel SB your mobo has, otherwise try googling your particular SB/raid controller model.

Just had a thought, does anyone here run IDE mode with SATA drives? I need reliability, does AHCI really give better performance over IDE?

If I run IDE mode, am I limited to 1.5gbs and not 3 then?
