Would there be any difference whatsoever between running an i950 at stock and an i920 overclocked to 3.07GHz? If so, please could you explain the difference?

Thanks

the 950 will probably run cooler, and having a higher multiplier will help with future oc. as for performance, doubt you would notice it.

A stock i7 950 runs at 3.2ghz with turbo on, but if your question is would an i7 920 at 3.2ghz be the exact same then pretty much yes.

The advantages of the i7 950 only really come into it when overclocking beyond 4ghz.

I'm looking at replacing one of my 775 rigs, with an Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping + motherboard. Just trying to decide on wether to hold off and wait for the rampage III, or, get a rampage II extreme.

Clock for clock there shouldn't be much of a speed difference at all. In fact, ironically you would probably notice th 920 is a tad faster due to higher QPI speeds etc. The price premium of the 950 isn't justifiable tbh, so just stick with the 920 :)

Not quite. If you ran both chips at 150bsck x20 for 3ghz, they'd be identical. Which one needs the least voltage would be impossible to predict.

If however you run one at 21x150 and the other at 23x137, the x21 system would be faster as it'll push the ram slightly harder.

The sole benefit is higher multiplier, this is useful if watercooling but pretty irrelevent on air.
