Hi guys,

just bought a new car and was going to swap over my policy to the new one as i have a multi car policy with them (esure)

however, im not sure they will actually insure me on it, they certainly wont quote me for it on their website.

basically the policy expires on the 23rd of January 2017 and ill be a due an extra year on the ncd.

If they wont swap the car on the policy what choices do i have for not losing out on this year of ncd?

old car 2010 tt tdi sline cab, new 2014 S5 cab.

ill be ringing them in the morning to find out, so this could all be moot, but would like it if someone has any advice in case they don't?

thanks!

If you have sold your vehicle then you cannot be insured for that vehicle.

Esure would be liable under the RTA Article 75 even for a different driver, especially if they drive uninsured, if the policy remains active.

If they won't insure you on the new vehicle (they might have different rules by new customer or existing customer) then you will lose the additional year of ncd. Nothing you can really do about it.

To be fair if you ring first thing tomorrow morning, neglect to mention that you've sold the old car and just transfer the policy you'll be hit with an increase in price but possibly not as much as a whole new policy.

I did it myself but not as badly as you have, wanted the new car, had done a few quotes a month or so earlier, cheapest prices came out at £300 more than my current policy. Got around that by getting 14 day dealership insurance to cover me on the drive home (that was £20) and enough time to shop around, rang my insurer and they said it would only be another £50 to transfer my policy to the new vehicle, so did that.

Either way, next time don't leave yourself in a situation where you have to either lie to your insurer about when you sold the car and find out first how much it would cost.

Thanks all! Haven't actually paid for/picked up the new car yet so I still have the old one. Insurance isn't a deal breaker for me. But would be nice if they can transfer. The s5 comes with the 5 day policy free for a bit of leeway. Should be picking it up Thursday or Friday this week.

Will update in the morning when I call em

Wording of my op could have been better regarding when I actually sell the old car (trading in)

I lost 8 months NCD by making this mistake :(

You could run the multicar policy with just one car for a month, and insure the new car on a new policy with no used NCD for a month, then cancel both policies and take out a new policy.

Good news all! They will do it, apparently there was some block caused by the fact they wanted 5 years ncd on this car, but it will be 5 in a couple months anyway so they said its fine.

Thanks for the help y'all :)

if anyones interested, they wanted £30.50 or such, of which £26 was a fee. (thats for about 6 weeks of cover left)

Does NCB even make that much of a difference these days to worry about? to me it makes no differences if its 5,6,7... in fact Ive even been quoted higher for adding additional ncb

Put in some details for 0 ncb, then use the same details but put 5y ncb. It's a considerable saving usually.

I'm paying just under £650 for my Fiesta ST with 1 years no claims. With 0 it was more like £2k. Although that is the obvious case where it matters :p
