Quick iPhone question

Thinking of buying a 16gb version tomorrow, but I'm not too well up on what the issues are with them.

I know you can 'jailbreak' them to allow use of any SIM, is that correct? I'd preferably want to use an O2 PAYG card in the phone, maybe my current Orange PAYG card, but would this cause any problems for me when firmware updates were sent from Apple?

Also heard an easy option is to 'jailbreak' the phone and use an O2 Simplicity tariff. Whilst this option seems excellent, my credit rating isn't great and I wouldn't like another possible rejection on file.

What would be the best option for me?

Cheers.

You can unlock it for any network. Using mine with Orange at the moment.

A firmware update in future could break any unlock, but it is your choice whether or not to update.

IMO use it with a PAYG SIM.

Jailbreak and unlock can easily be done to any iPhone.

Choose what ever sim card you want, weather it be a PAYG or Contract, put it in once you've unlocked and Jailbroken and enjoy.

Apple updates break unlocks, but after each update it's only a matter of weeks before it is unlockable. Just don't update the firmware until you know it's safe to.

Thanks. So I'd have to unlock it as well as jailbreak it?

Can I do that myself or would I need to spend more money getting that done?

You have to unlock it if you want to use something other than o2 or Tesco.

All done yourself, it's not possible for people to sell the service of unlocking iPhones.

No, just Jailbreak. But if you use the ZiPhone method, it will unlock it anyway.

Excellent, thanks.

Is it really worth spending all that money on something that may turn out to be problematic in the future, though? Would you recommend spending the extra £60 on the 16gb version over the 8gb?

Last thing, would I lose any functionality over the standard O2 contract if I had an O2 PAYG card in an iPhone?

Depends, do you really need 16GB? Or will 8GB be enough? Although £60 for double the memory isn't bad.

You will loose EDGE if you go for a PAYG sim, you will be able to use GPRS though. I think you can still use Cloud Wi-Fi though.

I has a question. If i bought a 16gb iphone. Are there any sims on 02 that would give me unlimited cloud and wifi and a few texts/calls for £x a month?

o2 simplicity gives you the option of a EDGE data bold on. Cloud would be the same for a o2 contract sim.

Right, would I have to pay to use Cloud?

Also, if I was to use the Wi-Fi on my home network through my router, I don't need to pay anything for that, do I? That's probably a ridiculous question but I really don't know much about them.

All I want it for is simple phone, SMS and music facilities. Plus the calendar stuff. I thought that instead of buying an iPod Touch, which I was planning to get, I'd get the iPhone instead. Since I don't really use any Internet/e-mail services on my phone when I'm out and about anyway, would O2 PAYG in an iPhone suit someone with my requirements?

I'm not sure about Cloud, I have never used it mate.

Nah you don't have to pay for your own Wi-Fi.

Yeah, o2 swim sounds like a good idea :)

Woops, that would teach me to read properly..

Unlimited Wi-Fi = Unlimited Cloud/Wi-Fi hotspots.

Unlimited Web Bolt On = Unlimited EDGE/GPRS/GSM etc.

Can someone please explain what EDGE, GPRS and Cloud are when used with an iPhone ?

Never heard of these things before.
Thanks

EDGE = 2.5G, mobile internet like 3G, just a bit slower.

GPRS = Used when EDGE isn't available, pretty slow.

Cloud = Wi-Fi broadband, not mobile. Can be found in some cafes etc.

Does edge work everywhere, so i wouldn't need cloud? Why does iphone have cloud and edge

Thanks for your help here justin :)

EDGE will only work in an area that supports it (Most large towns)

Cloud is fixed broaband Wi-Fi, like T-mobile hot spots you see on trains and some Startbucks cafes.

No problems, happy to help :)
