Just been thinking about this and realised that I don't know the exact answer.

If I leave my laptop on, and connected to the mains, will this in any way harm the life of the battery?

My thinking is that it shouldn't, as the charge circuit should shut off as soon as the battery is sensed to be full... but we all know how tempremental electonics batteries can be!

Ta for any insight!

I think to an extent it depends on the battery.
But i dont think it does it masses off good in the long run.
Your occasionally supposed to run down the battery to 0power (switch off the automatic standby first). This causes something within the battery to "reset" itself and battery life improves, think my manual says i should be doing it once every month or 2.

Check your laptop's sepcific battery instructions though.

How do u compleatly run the battery down on a laptop? i think i should do it on mine (compaq presario V5030EA)

Disable the alarms in "adjust power properties" (right click on your battery/ac power symbol), and then simply leave the computer on till its out of power.
Shouldnt hibernate or anything if youve disabled the alarms.

i was told this by my old electronics teacher in college, i was moaning about the battery life getting shorter, he told me to do this, and i did see a improvement in the battery life when running word etc, nothing major but maybe around a extra 20mins maybe cant remember for certain

If you use your notebook on mains a lot, take the battery out. Greatly reduces the wear and tear on it, and most notebooks will work without any problems like this.
