Hi,

The quick launch bar in windows 7 seems a little odd, how can I add a show desktop button?

I added the ventrilo icon to it, but it doesn't behave the same way compared to XP. If I click the vent icon it opens up the quick launch icon instead of launching it under the task bar.

Hard to explain....

Without hacking, i didnt think there was a quicklaunch bar in 7? Everything opens under the icons and not in their own item, unless you turn off grouping and show as icons.

And the show desktop button is now that little bar right at the end of the taskbar, to the right of the clock. Hover to show the desktop with peek, click to minimise everything.

Google: Windows 7 Quicklaunch. Some guy on Sevenforums has a great tutorial on how to do it. It IS a hidden folder.

C:\Users\(YOURNAME)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Right click on taskbar, toolbars new toolbar, then locate that folder on yours. Should be reet ;)

The show desktop button is already on the taskbar. Next to the clock.

yeah it's not very 'obvious' but i like that, you can just throw your mouse to the bottom right and click and the jobs done. much better than on the taskbar.

you can still get the old style quicklaunch including the show desktop button by doing what Macky posted above

Its reinventing the wheel if you ask me. I like the GUI changes, I just don't think theres a huge difference.

Sorry to bring up an old topic but I agree with the above.

Can anyone explain what benefits pinning items to the taskbar has over quick launch?

I pinned items for the first couple of weeks using W7 but it turned into a massive headache so have been using quick launch ever since. Pinning is less convenient, not more convenient. Why would I want to peek or cycle through things on the taskbar rather than add the quicklaunch shortcut for the folder I regularly use?

I still use quick launch, there's just too many programs.

The new task bar is good, but i only pin things that tend to be open rather than not. The quick launch has the more infrequently used stuff. Besides, i don't want a task bar totally covered in icons :p

Id prefer if that aero peak button beside the clock was positionable, i put it next to the start button.

The main thing that I can see it that you can launch pinned applications via the Windows Key + number combo. If you have Outlook as the first item on the list, WinKey + 1 will launch it. If it is already open, Windows will switch to it rather than launching a new instance. It's a feature I quite like. It's also nice being able to keep the windows in the same order all the time, for example having Outlook always as the first item on the taskbar.

I suppose it's an aquired taste - I hated it at first, but now I'm used to it, I wouldn't like to lose the feature.

Also, what Knubj3 showed me last night, is that if you grab a title bar of a window and move it left to right with your mouse quite fast it minimises every other window except the one you are grabbing :)

pretty neat imo!

it will be much better when 3rd party applications are coded to take advantage of it. already some do - like a progress bar when imgburn burns a cd. and there's a foobar plugin which can show album art and playback control buttons when you hover over it. and then there are various things that you get when you right click on them such as jump lists/various controls etc.

examples:

hover:
foo1.png

right click:
foo2.png

how do you make FB2k hover-compatible?

That doesn't really relate to quick launch though, does it? That's just Aero peek.

well just create your own folder full of shortcuts and add it next to the start button then. job done.

(obviously installing applications won't create shortcuts there by default but you can easiliy add them yourself.)
