So I've had my D3100 for about 6months now and have loved learning how to get a grasp of the basics.

I've been looking at getting myself a new lens, for general shooting. A few portraits, landscape, street photography etc.
I've been looking at the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G. as my budget is pretty low.

Questions are; Is this a good beginner lens to go for?
Will this Auto-Focus with my D3100? Noob question I know, just don't want to be an even bigger plonker and buy one and it didn't.

Thanks in advance :)

Hi, This lens will autofocus with your camera and is a great lens especially for portraits equivalent of 75mm on the crop sensor.

Indoors & landscapes I found too long but for candid shots its great and for the price it's a gem of a lens.

The 35mm DX will be a better bet I think though for a little extra pennies!!

Managed to find the 35mm for actually a little bit less than the 50mm :)

Thanks for the advice on the crop sensor, didn't realise this so I did a little reading on it.

I'm looking at the 35mm also. Can anybody confirm whether Nikon lenses are much cheaper in duty free or the States? I'm off on my honeymoon in just over a week, so would wait if I can grab a bargain. Although £159 isn't too bad I guess.

Out of the box yesterday - just a few ordinary snaps in my bedroom at 1.8
