Quick MOT question

I know this used to be the case, but regs have changed a lot recently...

Spare tyre: Do I actually need one? I think the rules are that it must be legal if you have one present but its not a fail if you don't have one at all. Is this still the case?

As far as I know, that is the case. At least that is what I have heard.*

Spare is not tested at MOT. Doesnt have to be there either.

I've seen an advisory for "Spare Tyre Defective" on a car I was looking at, so it's not a fail but perhaps it is checked.

The place I get MOT's done always checks the spare and gives a advisory if damaged or worn, but this is simply a courtesy for the kind of people that probably never look at the spare until they need it. They don't have to check or advise since only the tyres fitted to the road wheels in use are testable.
