If i want to join two pcs together with a network cable just to share some files temporarly which cable do i need. Just want to make sure, as i have been using the cable supplied with my router but that usually brings up limited connectivity.
Thanks

You will also need to specify an IP on both machines for it to work.

You will need a crossover, though most kit is auto sensing so a straight through will probably work.

You dont have to assign IP address they will be givein APIPA in the 169.254 range.

So should the bog standard cable that comes with a router work? Its just the yellow ones you get with netgears "Cat.5 Patch cable"

Yes, if at least one machine at either end has a network card less than about six years old, it'll automatically cross over for you.

When you get the latter message, it's actually done the former.
