I'm about the start wiring in the network cables in the house. I noticed on the wall sockets it says A and B. Which way should I use?

Also, the sockets have little plastic covers over half of the blocks - anyone know what the reason for this is?

Depends which way round A and B are on your sockets
essentially you need to go for the way round which does not cross them over
You will see that one of them (either A or B) will have all the colour paired up together so for example Green with be right next to Green-White, Blue will be right next to Blue-White. This is the one which you need to go for
On the other letter, two of them will be swapped around so it will be a bit of a mis match
Hopefully it should be obvious what i mean.

The covers are normally if you only install one module into the surround. If you need to install two modules then they should pop out, if only one modules then leave them in.

Most places will use B but really it doesn't matter providing the termination is the same at both ends. Got a photo of the plastic covers?

So you randomly swap between A and B depending on which sockets you buy? This is obviously complete bobbins!

As above, use B or follow which ever standard already exists on the site.

Assuming that you want to use straight-through cables (which is likely), then use either standard, just make sure that you use the same standard on both ends of your cable.
If you're after a crossover cable, then you want to use both standards, A on one end and B on the other.
