I've had little to do with digital photography for some time now, but was recently looking at the quite insane features and specs of the D800. It seems to leave every other Nikon body in the shade if I was reading it right. Does anyone know if Nikon have any intention to update the D4 with those new features?

TIA.

I am not sure what you are reading or comprehending, the D4 is Nikon's newest top of the line camera that supports all of Nikon's latest technology, and is relatively new in its life cycle. It wont be upgraded fully for 3.5-4.5 years, although there might be a minor upgrade to an 's' model (which is sometimes quite a boost like the D3->D3s, sometimes irrelevant like the D300->D300s).

There is nothing in the D800 that is better than in thr D4 or missing in the D4. The main difference is that the D4 is a top of the line sports and PJ camera, very high burst rate, large buffer, pro body with built in grip, higher capaity batteries, top of the line weather proofing, voice memos etc. The D800 is a much slower camera with a high res sensor. Each are aimed at different markets and behave quite differently and Both complement each other nicely. The D800 shares many of the same internals such as AF and metering modules, processing ASIC etc., the body is still very high quality weather sealed mag-alloy.

From recent reviews it is clear the D4 sensor is state of the art, at least as good as the Canon 1D-X if not better. There is really nothing more to be done at the current time.

So I don't really understand your question. Do you mean will there be D3x replacement consisting of the D800 sensor i a D4 body? That would be extremely unlikely because it would be impossible to differentiate the camera bodies enough. Similarly, if the the D4 sensor would appear in a D800 body, much like the D3 sensor appeared in the D700. This is unlikely currently, but if there is a D4s with a new sensor then they might sell a D800(h) that has the old D4 sensor, but I doubt this will ever happen. Full frame cameras are a niche product and constitute a tiny amount of sales, there are already 3 fantastic camera bodies with the older ones mostly easily found as new.

The next camera bodies will all be DX. The D7000 successor, the D7100, is expected soon, along with some kind of D300 replacement. After that is probably a couple of Nikon 1 cameras. There wont be any new Nikon FF for several years as they have only just been replaced and these more expensive bodies have a 3-5 year life cycle.

I think there would be a market for a D4x (d800 sensor in d4), as well as a D710.

The question is how big and would they be profitable, that I doubt.

Between the D800, D600, D4, and readily available D700, D3 and D3s bodies the market for a D710 (if I understand you, an updated D700) is really non existent. Those that wanted high res (which was about 60-70% of the D700 owners) got the D800, those that want pro AF and high speed can have a D4 if they have budget or look for a D3/D3s, those that want an updated sensor but without the expense of the D800 have the D600. So who is left, those that want a D4 for the price of a D600? How will Nikon make that economically viable?

A D4x probably has a bigger market. there will be pros that don't care about the price and want the D800 sensor to expedition/nature that can better handle a pro life style of rough and tumble, jungle exploration, Antarctica trips etc.

I think there would be a market for a D800 sensor in a D4 body. The D4 body is gorgeous, and has some extra useful features the D800 hasn't got. Slap on some dual expeed processors for 8FPS FF and 12FPS DX and you have a very high end body.

I also think a D710 would also make sense. Basically a D800 with a D600 sensor, maybe even stick a flippy flappy screen on it, then discount the D600..
