Just brought a new base unit that came with a 3 month subscription to NIS 2010. only have 29 days left and thinking of renewing for 12 months. Online renewal from Norton costs £39.99 however shopping around from various sites including this one I can buy the disc version for less than £20 including delivery.

Do the disc versions come with the full 12 months?

Also do I have to uninstall my current version and the reinstall again or do I just enter the cd key on the subscription box in NIS?

Is there any difference between OEM and Retail boxed versions?

Don't most people avoid Norton and McAfee? I think most just use AVG or similar. I'm seeing how Microsoft Security Essentials goes at the moment, seems OK.

Andi.

There are far better paid apps about - NOD32 and Kaspersky being two of them. Avoid the yellow peril :p
Yep either one of these would be good. Although Norton has improved in the system resource hogging area with version 4, there are still better products on the market.

Should say the PC was brought primarily for my mum but also me when I stop over. Norton works ok and silently in the background which is why i'd sooner leave that on it. I personaly don't use norton but for my mum it's simple and does the job hence why i'm enquiring about renewing the subscription for that.

I used to use McAfee, and used it for years. Then I started using Microsoft Security Essentials, and have found no problems with it, up to now.:D

If you have Barclays current account you may have a free licence for Kespersky, which looking at the Poll in the sticky is more popular than Norton.

My mums netbook came with the obligatory 30 day versions of both (no idea why) Norton and mcAfee and I really couldn't reccomend either, bloated, intrusive software that blocked whatever they felt like, missed real threats and significantly impacted on performance while loading the OS up with a ton of crap... almost as bad as actually having malware on there.

And this.

Currently using Kaspersky, find it very comprehensive, though not a big fan of the interface.

Oh, and I don't rate the free Microsoft AV very highly, needed reinstalling a few times for me, and never finds anything compared to Kaspersky on my and my families other machines. It's now been retired to something really light for my HTPC only, wouldn't use it on a main machine personally.

Cheaper versions normally come with a 1 year licence. And if you get an OEM version it can work fairly cheap, e.g. £15.99 at OcUK

When I've order them in the past you got a white paper CD sleeve with serial number sticker on the back, and CD inside. Maybe a leaflet if lucky. So nothing like the boxed picture shown on website link above.

Was an avid NOD32 user until my license ran out recently, had heard nothing but good things about Microsoft Security Essentials and decided to give it ago....haven't looked back since, give it ago what have you got to lose.
