Hi there,

Will be ordering some new components tomorrow and just pondering whether or not to upgrade my graphics card, currently a x1800XT 256MB.

The bits I'll be ordered are:
  • Noctua NH-U12F (Socket LGA775/754/939/940/AM2) Heatsink
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
  • GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC)
  • Gigabyte GA_P35C_DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 & DDR3 Motherboard
I'll also be installing Vista on this.

Would upgrading the graphics card be a waste, or a decent upgrade? I do play games, only things such as CSS at the moment, but plan on playing games such as Unreal 2007 when they come out.

The graphics card I'd be looking at would be the OcUK GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-054-OK&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=927). Also, would this be fine on a "Tagan TG480-U01 480W ATX2.0 SLi Compliant Silent PSU" (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-000-TG&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=393)?

Cheers

Looks good.

I would swap the RAM for Ballistix PC5300 seeing as its now cheaper than the Giel & it will clock to 1000MHz easily enough which the Giel won't, I beleive it can also hit 800MHz at 4-4-4-14 whcih the Giel also can't do :)

The system will be fine with the Targan PSU, if you upgrade to the 8800 then you might be pushing it however. Depending on the number of fans/hdds you may get instability with an 8800 added.

I've got 2 x 120mm fans, 1 DVD-RW, 2 x 200GB IDE HDD's and 1 x 320GB SATAII.

This the RAM by the way? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-088-CR

Cheers!

Been doing a bit of reading and apprantely it should run fine. I guess I could always leave a HDD out if need be :)

The Ballistix is cheaper though, and the giel can only clock to about 900MHz tops whereas the Ballistix can hit 1100.

Good lord, that's enough to put me off buying it anyway

Going to order this tomorrow and hopefully get it Tuesday :)

there's prolly a fair share of every make of ram failing if you look around really, usually everything works as it should but every now and again you end up with something bad just the luck of the draw, it's just recently there seems to be a lot
of "my ballistic died" etc threads, maybe that's because it's been so popular more people have bought it so more people end up with dodgy ram?

this geil stuff is working fine for me but there's also a few threads of peple not being able to get 4-4-4-12 so i reckon it's pot luck whatever you buy.
