Guys im sticking with XP for the time being and cant afford the complete mobo, cpu and ram overhaul that is needed in a maybe 6months.

Im keeping my E6600 3gig of ram and mobo but need a better GPU than my 512 4870.

Suggestions? Keeping in mind what is worth getting considering the limitations of the current hardwear - i say limitations, but its still relatively high end in general terms, but still.... i want the best bang for buck increase whilst i sit on my wallet for a bit longer

cheers

Ah, roger that.

Probably the best upgrade is a second 4870, this will give you a nice performance boost, so long as your monitor resolution is 1680x1050 or less. The second slot only runs at a max speed of 4x, which isn't ideal, but gives you enough bandwidth to realise a significant performance increase from the second card.

If you are running at 1920x1080 or above I suggest looking towards replacing the graphics card with something of the order of an ATI HD 5850.

As for the rest, you may be able to run more stably (and possibly overclock further) with 2x2GB RAM. I assume you are running XP 32bit - so making use of all of the RAM would require a 64bit OS.

excellent advice - i was thinking down the lines of a 5870 and maybe a change in RAM too - can you possibly help me with a recommendation for some ram?

DDR2 has got blooming expensive recently - so be prepared for the massive price hike. With this in mind the best DDR2 stuff is this, really nice RAM.

That said, you can now sell your current RAM for a decent price - which should offset the price hike a bit.

Is your copy of XP 64 bit so you can make use of all the RAM? If not, I would recommend upgrading OS. Are you a student by any chance? as us scrounging buggers get Win 7 Pro Upgrade for £30 direct from microsoft.
