Photoshop

Magic wand tool
Save as .gif
check settings to show transparancy.

About 2 seconds work.

what graphics program do you have do you simply want to add it on top of a different background?

When it's a gift you need to go:
"Image > Mode > RGB"

Also, when you want to save an image thats transparent, use a .tif and not.gif.

When removing background etc.. rarely will the magic wand do a great job on a complex image, certainly not on fur or hair, use mask's and eraser or atleast a proper technique

I didn't know he wanted a professional looking image.
