quick photoshop (gimp) question from a noob

whenever a photoshop thread appears in the general discussion i find some pictures, open them in gimp, lasso whoever's head/body i want, feather it, then combine the pictures to be one hopefully funny photoshop.

however, the one thing i have a major problem is with flyaway hair. not so much a problem with guys, but its a major problem when im trying to photoshop a girl with long hair. apart from lassoing the gaps between every single bit of hair individually, or, as i prefer to, cutting the flyaway hair out completely, is there an easier option to get the flyaway hair without the background thats behind it?

(please bear in mind that im a complete noob with gimp)
